Rouge is a discoloration typically found on the internal surfaces of a water system which has been constructed from stainless steel, and operated at elevated temperatures typically above 65°C. Sometimes the rouge is easily removed by wiping, readily staining a white cloth with a rusty red color, and on other occasions the color seems to be embedded into the metal itself and is not easily removed by wiping.
